There's a good reason for this fascination too: a huge proportion of important historical events have occurred within European borders, and many of our ancestors were born, fought or died there. For citizens of the New World (the United States, Canada, Australia, and so forth), a trip to Europe can be an opportunity to reconnect with a family past; whilst for Brits a holiday in Europe may provide the chance to reconcile the great loss of life experienced in the two World Wars, or to form a greater bond with their European neighbours. Holidays to Normandy and Versailles in France, Rome and Venice in Italy, Berlin and Munich in Germany, St. Petersburg and Moscow in Russia, Prague in the Czech Republic, and Vienna in Austria are all popular locations for such historical sojourns, particularly in the summer holidays when the weather is more likely to be fine. You can visit grand palaces and fairytale abodes such as those which are scattered throughout France, Germany, Luxembourg and Austria; you can wander through famous museums that have collections of ancient artefacts and important modern historical exhibitions; or you can explore world renowned art galleries such as the Louvre in Paris, which contains Da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa' amongst other works of art. If you prefer, you can climb through picturesque castle ruins that have been left abandoned to history, or you can spend time walking the hallowed grounds of battles and military feats such as at Waterloo or on the beaches of Normandy. All of these possibilities and more await the historical holiday-maker in Europe.

Within the United Kingdom itself there are also plenty of opportunities to go on a historical break. Even within London there are many world famous historical locations well worth visiting - the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the British Museum, Westminster Abbey and the National Portrait Gallery just a few of the sights worth taking in. Further afield, you may consider stopping for a weekend break in Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare; Edinburgh, the city that ruled the Scottish kingdom for hundreds of years; or the famous and prestigious university towns of Oxford and Cambridge. If you want to go on a historically-themed vacation but are restricted by your budget, staying within the UK should be the easiest way to ensure you have a cheap and affordable holiday.
